Why it is kept
The tenth day, of victory. The north remembers Rama over Ravana, the east the Goddess over Mahishasura. A day to begin learning, and to honour books, tools and arms.
How it is kept
Ravana's effigy burns in the north; in Maharashtra apta leaves are given as gold; in Mysuru the Goddess rides in procession.
