Makar Sankranti
मकर संक्रांतिमकर संक्रांत
Also called: Pongal · Uttarayan
Why it is kept
The sun enters Makara and the year turns toward its northern half. In the Bhagavata, Bhishma waits on his bed of arrows for this turning before he leaves his body.
The sun enters Makara at 21:10 on the 14th, after sunset, so the day is kept on the 15th.
How it is kept
Sesame and jaggery everywhere; kites in Gujarat, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, the bath at the Ganga's mouth.
